A Welcome meal
A Welcome meal
I am a school counselor and do craft shows on the side. At one of my shows a year ago in November, my husband and I were eating out. We were in a college town, and there were two college students eating at a table near us. As I occasionally do, I decided to buy their meal for them. (I remember what it was like to be a broke college student!)
I usually do this anonymously. So I left a message on the back of one of my business cards that said "Practicing an Act of Kindness -- Pass it on – From a Student who is learning Kindness."
Yesterday, 13 months later, I received a note with the following message:
"I don't know if I am writing this note to the right person, but last year I was having a meal with my roommate and someone paid for our meal and left your business card. He or she wrote on the back of the card, "Practicing an Act of Kindness -- Pass it on – From a Student who is learning Kindness."
"This card is a message of my appreciation to you for paying for our meal. That simple act made a huge impact on me and continues to. You see, I graduated from college in May with my degree in psychology and I am now pursuing a Master’s degree in counseling. Here in this big, impersonal city, I remember your simple act whenever I have even a small chance to help someone out. I'm not perfect, but I am trying to throw a little extra kindness into my life. I am also trying to acknowledge all the small kindnesses that I see everyday.
"I didn't mean to tell you my life story. I just wanted to shed some light on the person who benefited from your kindness. Please continue to practice your Acts of Kindness. Thank you again."
It made me cry when I first read it and still brings tears to my eyes. The meal cost me less than $20, and the benefits for this young lady and those she comes in contact with, have no dollar value. This simple thank-you letter inspires me to want to do this more often and with zeal! I hope all of you will realize you also have the power to do little things that have huge impacts!
